Conclusion.

It’s over.

Clip posted, and I guess that speaks for itself; there’s no much left to say, but I feel I should make at least one final obligatory post, summing up the assignment or something.. Though what can I say that I haven’t already?


It’s been a long couple of days, in a perfect world I wouldn’t have spent the final 60 hours working tirelessly getting three assignments done all at once, but what’s done is done, and I’m pleased with what we came up with.


I see the story as one which is pretty easy to follow; one guy sends a text, the text travels out, finds, and connects the second guy. The two are now linked together via this energy, and are now free to communicate with one another. Technology makes it happen.

It’s presented effectively and efficiently, demonstrating the ideas of travel and motion through accurately placed shots; utilizing this stop motion medium, and using symbols of communication today- The computer, and mobile phone. Two widespread and easily accessible devices, people instantly associate phones with connection and communitarian, hence the reason it is the real focus of that entire first sequence.

The Photoshop effects are used where required to demonstrate the presence of this communicative energy. Although it’s a form which doesn’t really exist in a physical sense, it’s still a very powerful, invisible energy in our world. Using the digital mediums, we unlocked and inspired it to take on this elegant, magnificent form, wrapping itself around reality and taking people into its realm.

There’s then a sequence depicting the two in this backwards realm, they exist as silhouettes, shadows, avatars of themselves. They are an extension of their own selves, and of reality. They’re linked to their true selves through using this Photoshop energy; the blue and green colours which envelop them, that same energy winds up defining them. They run together, the energies becomes more furious as they get closer, and they collide.

The end is left to the viewer. The white screen flares, you are left to interpret it how you will. You’ve seen the characters, you see them connect, and you see them come together. Nothing more is required to portray this idea of communication, and I think any addition material would cheapen this effect.

So there we go. Project analysis complete. I hope this has been as fun for you to read as it has been for me to write up. Thanks for your patience, enjoy the ret of your day.

Rob: Fantastic partner. Always open for the new ideas and suggestions, good knowledge of the photography, and got us every single shot we used. Even got us some extra ones. Some great shots of Pigeons, and some weird plastic batfish-thing.

Though we had a bit of a slow start, we totally busted our asses over these last couple of days, and got it done. He supplied our little army with sustainence, motivated us with fresh ideas, did grunt-work, opening and saving individual frames, strung them all together, and provided audio. I think he came up with the name too. I can’t remember anymore, we brainstormed that together for a while, to thanks to Thesaurus.com for that. Everything that turned our clip from a series of broken .gifs and path loops to what it is now.

Animation Round Three: Confrontation
The most exhausting and time consuming of all the reels so far. Worked on this from 5am this morning, through until 10pm tonight. 67 Frames. Every single one individually animated. The stick men idea was scrapped earlier today in favor of these silhouette figures, which run towards one another, are engulfed in the communicative energy, and collide. Unfortunately though, this scene runs too long. Which means I’m gonna wind up cutting about 2-3 hours work. But I’m finished. All the animation stuff is done, Rob has taken the reigns from me and insisted that I get some sleep and let him finish the rest of the post production stuff.Update blog with progress.Rant more about tumblr.Post finished clip.
Before I head off though, I must once again extend all my thanks the fine individual who selected Tumblr as our upload site, because it’s inability to post .gif images means that I cannot infact run a working progress diary. After having worked consistantly on something for 24 hours straight, and then not being able to present that work … nothing in the world could piss me off more.  So there you go. A nice little paragraph directed at whooever that was. You sir/maddam, have sucessfully made this process an absolute hell for me.

Uggghjesus this. This took nearly three hours. The stickmen have been upgraded to a basic silhouette of the person, because it’s less tacky that way. But holy fuck. Runcycles. Never again, I swear.
Once again, I’ve reduced size and image-quality, 2colours make for easy uploading. The real ones aren’t all mutated and pixelated. Once Rob sees and okays this(?), I’ll sparkle the christ out of these guys. Though I’ve still got no idea how I’m gonna get them to meet+clash.

Last Minute research.

Stickmen Sequence:

Anatomy: Figured I may as well get it right. Human anatomy. Not ashamed to say I pretty much just traced this. Different parts on different layers; Head, neck, torso, belly, pelvis. Upper and lower sections of the arms and legs, and then hands and feet respectively.

Animation Sequence Two.

Photoshop pulled through. For the first time in its life it just manned the fuck up, stopped bitching, and just did what it was supposed to. Finished Computer_Engulfment sequence an hour and a half ahead of schedule. Though aiming for seven was the maximum, and still a pretty stupid goal. That’s like 9 hours of straight Photoshopping. Nothanks.
Seven and a half is still pretty lame, given the final result isn’t magical. But given the quality of the machine I’m running, and the fact this is unpaid work, it’s like… I just dont care anymore.

Midday Tuesday is getting closer, time to sort out this stickman sequence.

Animation Progress: Frames 13->23.

annnddd after three hours, I’ve gotten two frames done.
I called it, photoshop crashed three times in the first hour, and I lost a decent 45 minutes after that just sitting there waitig for loadingtimes. It’s gotten to the point where I can’t actually view the animation, because it loads too slowly.
I expect the next four frames will take me about an hour each, taking into account the time I’ll send waiting for it to load. Longer if it crashes again.
Hopefully I’ll have this reel done by seven. Realisticly, that’s the only way I see us finishing this thing.

Two Hours Later

Another five frames done; this is really beginning to destroy Photoshop, so I’m making a blogpost while it saves. Having this crash on me now would probably kill me inside. I imagine I’m going to experience a wee bit of heartbreak over the last couple of frames, I think I’ve only got another 5-6 left to do on this reel, and it’s where things get psychotic and very messy. My computer hates messy, and likes to suicide on me when things get too tough. I think it needs to harden up.


I’m really not sure about these blogposts either, to be perfectly honest. The brief mentions we’ve gotta do in depth research and investigation into our topic. I mean, I’ve done a bit, but most of the stopmotion background and what-have-you has been covered by Rob, since he’s the one who’se been taking the photos and presenting most of the ideas in our meetings. Other then pitching the initial idea, and throwing a suggestion or two into the mix for this thing, I’ve just sat back, followed his instructions, and waited for now to come out and do this post-production stuff. Our thing relies heavily on these effects, 15 seconds of our video is this thing is a bubbly mass of swirly digisnakes. It’s not so much something you can research, since most of it is just me putting what I already know how to do into the mix, and winging it.


Most of the stuff I’m doing doing stems from knowledge based solely off of experience, and just thousands (no exaggeration, literally thousands) of hours just working in between Photoshop and Corel Painter in the past. Should I be posting previous work or something? Most of the tricks I have is just stuff I picked up working freelance last year, and the stuff I did there is pretty lame and embarrassing… but I mean, is that what I need to do to ensure I get the grade?

I imagine by the end of this I will have spent a decent 30-40+ hours working these effects, I’d hate to see that wasted because I didn’t waste enough time browsing blogs and watching videos on youtube.

No offense to the one who writes them, but your ambiguous briefs suck lol :(.


Sorry for the longpost, if you tutors have to read all of this crap then I sincerely apologize for wasting so much of your lives. It’s late, I have a few sleepless nights  ahead, and I’m just worried.

It’s just a small reel this time, so I’ve already completed the first twelve frames of this. Photoshop is only just beginning to whine, and now there’s the uphill struggle of doing the big, character-interaction bolts and all that. This shit is gonna be sparklier then a rainbow.
